Configuring the Benthos C3D server with Isis®

The Benthos C3D sonar connects to Isis via an Ethernet connection, the C3D controller (BenthosC3DController.exe) is automatically launched by Isis.

Note that because the C3D sonar logs both Side Scan data and Interferometric Bathymetry the C3D interface is ONLY available in Isis, there is no C3D interface in either SS-Logger or MB-Logger

The default IP address of the C3D sonar is 192.168.0.40, you need to configure the network card on the system that is running Isis to be in the same IP range, in the example we have chosen 192.168.0.39 – you must not use 192.168.0.40

Open local area connections and select Properties for TCP/IP:

Enter an address in the same range as the sonar:

Click OK to exit and then launch Isis, Click File>Record Setup then Sonar Setup.

From the drop down list of servers select Benthos C3D.  The settings in the Side Scan sonar information box are correct, there is no need to change anything here, click OK, three times to return to the Isis main window:

Click the red Record button in Isis, the C3D server will launch, (make sure that the sonar is connected and running)

Click the Settings button and then the Connection Tab, enter the correct IP address for the sonar (default is 192.168.0.40) and then the Connect button.

Click OK to close the dialog box.

The Benthos C3D controller will show both the green Connected indicator and the blue Data indicator.

At this point the Isis main widow will become active with some default windows:  At the time of writing the Scrolling 3D window will NOT be working, we must manually configure the bathy display.

Click the Window menu and select Interferometry Bathymetry and Bathy Color Coded:

A fourth window will open in Isis displaying the C3D bathymetry data as a color coded waterfall, you should close the Scrolling 3D window and reposition the other windows as needed, see below for a suggested layout:

Right Click anywhere in the Bathy Color window to open the Bathymetry Color Display Settings dialog:

Click the check box to make this the default display, there are many different settings in this dialog that allow you to configure the Bathy display, in general the default settings will work fine in the majority of cases.  Feel free to adjust them to get the display you find the most useful for QC of the bathy data during acquisition, none of these settings have any effect on the logged data.

Now go to the Isis Configure menu and choose Save Setup:

This will preserve all the current window settings the next time Isis is launched.

Description of C3D windows:

Color Coded bathy

A waterfall-type display of the bathy data, the user can select various options with regard to color, depth range etc.

Swath display

A 2D display of the bathy data showing the individual computed points for each depth.

Side - Scan waterfall

The standard Side Scan waterfall, behaves in exactkly the same way as any Isis side scan waterfall, with bottom tracking TVG etc.

Right clicking in any display will open a dialog box with all available options for that display.

For example right clicking in either the Color Coded bathy or Swath Bathy windows allows the user to show either Roll corrected data or unstabilised data:
